The invention discloses a traffic violation detecting method and system. The method comprises the following steps. Step 1: putting a camera head into a pre-set position; step 2: acquiring violation information at the coverage of the pre-set position; step 3: putting the camera head into a next pre-set position after a pre-set time and then performing step 1 and step 2 again; the system comprises a camera head, a video analyzing unit in connection with the camera head, and a camera head control unit in connection with the camera head and the video analyzing unit; according to the embodiments of the invention, a camera head is mounted at a proper position of a cross road to monitor all directions of the cross road based on pre-set patrolling strategies, to acquire traffic violation information at corresponding pre-set positions and to detect violations in all directions. In comparison with a detecting method in the prior art, the traffic violation detecting method provided by the invention is low in management cost and the burden to maintain a system with the method is also small.
