The invention relates to an average waterline detecting method. The average waterline detecting method comprises the steps that a camera device arranged at the fixed point collects staff gauge video images of a ship; the camera device sends the collected staff gauge video images to an image signal receiver; the image signal receiver sends the received staff gauge images to a staff gauge detecting device; the staff gauge detecting device extracts a plurality of staff gauge images from the staff gauge video images, conducts channel binarization processing on HIS color space of the staff gauge images and conducts threshold processing on the binarized staff gauge images to obtain a plurality of sets of draft data; all the draft data at present are averaged, and then an average waterline of draft of the ship is obtained. By means of the method, the average waterline position of draft of the ship can be measured conveniently, quickly and accurately, personal errors are effectively avoided, and the limitation that checking weight by draft is limited by severe weather is greatly changed.
