The invention discloses a photovoltaic electric vehicle energy system and a design method thereof. The energy system comprises a photovoltaic array, peak power trackers, relays, storage batteries, a motor controller and a motor. The photovoltaic array is divided into two or more sub-photovoltaic arrays. Each sub-photovoltaic array is connected with one peak power tracker. The peak power trackers are connected in series and/or in parallel and are electrically connected with the storage batteries and the motor controller through the relays. The motor controller controls the motor. According to the photovoltaic electric vehicle energy system and the design method thereof, the influences of the shadow of a driving cab on the photovoltaic array are considered, the photovoltaic array is divided into the sub-photovoltaic arrays, and therefore battery packs, not shielded by the shadow, in the array are not affected by battery packs shielded by the shadow, maximum power output can still be achieved, and power loss, caused by shadow shielding, in a traditional centralized MPPT system is greatly reduced.
