The invention relates to traffic management, and especially relates to a real-time lane congestion display system. The real-time lane congestion display system comprises a server and vehicle-borne controllers. The server and the vehicle-borne controllers are connected through communication. Each vehicle-borne controller comprises a controller, a communication module, and a positioning device. The positioning devices are high-precision positioning devices and can position a vehicle on a lane, and each positioning device obtains the accurate real-time location of an on-road vehicle to position the vehicle on a lane. The server sends the congestion indexes of lanes near the location to the corresponding vehicle-borne controller according to the location of the vehicle. The vehicle-borne controllers receive the congestion indexes of the lanes, and display the position covering the lanes on a map, wherein different colors represents different congestion indexes. A visual lane congestion index display mode can help a driver to select a driving route and is conductive to traffic management.
