Provided is a parking space detector (10) designed so as not to erroneously detect an inter-vehicle distance (DV) as a parking space (PS), the inter-vehicle distance (DV) being the distance between oncoming vehicles (14m) continuously passing by. The invention is provided with a parking space presence determination part (62) for determining whether or not a parking space (PS) for a vehicle (12, 12A) is present. The parking space presence determination part (62) is designed so as to determine whether or not oncoming vehicles (14m) are stationary on the basis of the vehicle speed (Vs) and the relative speed (Vrs) of the oncoming vehicles (14m), therefore preventing the space (inter-vehicle distance (DV)) between two other oncoming vehicles (14m) being erroneously detected as a parking space (PS), the oncoming vehicles being vehicles traveling toward the vehicle (12, 12A) and continuously passing by.
