The present invention provides a method for releasing an automatic parking brake, which can avoid negative effect to the releasing process of the automatic parking brake caused by electric current measurement error, and ensure sufficient switch-off degree of the automatic parking brake with a calibrated measuring chain and without high cost at any time. The automatic parking brake includes an electric motor brake for producing an electromechanical clamping force. The method includes steps as follows: estimating a release travel of the automatic parking brake based on a measured motor voltage and a motor current, and comparing the estimated release travel with the minimum total release travel. The method further includes a step of querying at least one additional switch-off criterion to obtain a minium total release travel.
