The invention provides a traffic volume detection method using lane splitting and combining. The method includes the steps of determining a detection area in a coordinate image of a video image, and splitting each lane into two half lanes; determining background threshold intervals of R,G and B channels of a background image of the detection area; with the background threshold intervals of the R,G and B channels of the background image of the detection area, and subjecting each pixel of a detection image of the detection area to filtering binarization so as to generate a binary image of each single-color channel; subjecting binary contents of the R,G and B channels to OR operation so as to obtain final binary images; counting the number of active pixels of each half lane; judging the lanes which vehicles run on, in a combinatory manner. The method has the advantages that lane splitting and combining helps greatly improve detection accuracy.
