The invention relates to a hydraulic retarder with low air blowing loss. A hydraulic retarder body is additionally provided with a gas pump and a gas storage tank, wherein a closed circulating gas path is formed by communicating a working cavity, an oil-gas separation chamber, the gas pump, the gas storage tank and an oil groove through a pipeline and a valve; and gas in the closed circulating gas path has the density less than that of the air. When the hydraulic retarder idles, the density of the gas in the working cavity is less than that of the air, and the density of the gas in the working cavity is greatly reduced, so that the air blowing loss is reduced and the fuel economical efficiency of vehicles is improved.
