The invention relates to a braking system for motor vehicles which can be controlled in a brake-by-wire operating mode both by the vehicle driver and independently of the vehicle driver, with: a master brake cylinder (2) which can be operated by means of a brake pedal (1) which cylinder has at least one piston (15, 16) and at least one pressure chamber (17, 18), to which a brake circuit (I, II) with wheel brakes (8, 9, 10, 11) can be connected or is connected; and a simulation device (3) with at least one elastic element (33), which provides an acceptable brake pedal feel to the vehicle driver in the brake-by-wire operating mode, wherein the simulation device (3) has a hydraulic simulator chamber (29) which can be hydraulically connected, or is hydraulically connected, through a first hydraulic connection (54) to the pressure chamber (17) in the master brake cylinder (2) and which is in a separable connection (46) by means of an electrically actuated isolation valve (28) with a pressure means reservoir (4) under atmospheric pressure, wherein a media separator device (47) is arranged in the connection (46) between the simulator chamber (29) and the isolation valve (28). The invention further relates to a method for operating a braking system.
