The invention discloses a bus GPS (Global Positioning System) probe vehicle based urban traffic state recognition method. The bus GPS probe vehicle based urban traffic state recognition method comprises the following steps of collecting GPS data by a remote control center through a bus GPS probe vehicle, obtaining the instantaneous speed of the bus GPS probe vehicle in every road section or area and drawing a speed change curve of the bus GPS probe vehicle; performing transformation processing on the speed change curve of the bus GPS probe vehicle and extracting the change rate frequency and the frequency spectrum characteristics; inputting extracted characteristic factors to an SVM (Support Vector Machine) and performing data classification and outputting a classification result through the SVM. Compared with the prior art, the real-time information of the traffic condition of every urban road section or area is obtained through the accurate speed and position information provided by the bus GPS probe vehicle and the transformation, the extraction on the characteristic factors and the SVM classification, the judgment is performed on the current smooth or heavy traffic condition, and accordingly the efficiency is high, the accuracy is high, the accurate information can be provided for the traffic management department and drivers so as to take timely measures, and the safety and the high efficiency of the road traffic are greatly improved.
