The present invention relates to a high-strength polyester fiber for seat belts, and more particularly, to a polyester fiber for seat belts and to a method for manufacturing same, wherein the inherent viscosity of the polyester fiber is 0.8 to 1.5 dl/g, the tensile strength thereof is 8.8 g/d or higher, and the fineness thereof is 400 to 1,800 deniers. The polyester fiber of the present invention comprises a filament having high strength, low elastic modulus, and high elongation at break to significantly reduce contraction and ensure excellent mechanical properties. Thus, the polyester fiber of the present invention may be used in the production of a seat belt having excellent shock-absorbing properties and significantly improved wear resistance, heat resistance, and tension retention even at a density of 260 fibers/inch.
