The invention relates to the field of intelligent traffic monitoring and discloses a method for traffic flow statistics based on video monitoring. The method includes the step: initializing a first-frame image to set up a background model; adopting the background model to extract foreground images of a video frame image from a second frame; updating the background model; determining an image with a foreground image area larger than a set value as a moving object, calculating a circumscribed rectangle of the moving object, if length and width of the circumscribed rectangle is within a set range, determining that the moving object is a vehicle; otherwise, searching other combinable circumscribed rectangles, and if length and width of the combined circumscribed rectangle is within the set range, determining that the moving object is a vehicle; tracking the vehicle, if the vehicle appears in consecutive three frames, determining that the vehicle is in stable motion; when the vehicle reaches a second virtual loop, performing traffic flow statistics. The method for traffic flow statistics based on video monitoring has the advantages of convenience in installation and high precision.
