The invention relates to a method and a device for determining a wheel diameter (10) of a vehicle (2), in particular of a rail vehicle, wherein a first distance (30) between a distance sensor (16, 18) and an axis of rotation (24) of the wheel (8) is determined when the distance sensor (16, 18) is installed, wherein a second distance (28) between the distance sensor (16, 18) and the running surface (26) of the wheel (8) is determined during the operation of the vehicle (2), and wherein the diameter (10) of the wheel (8) is determined in accordance with the relation 2*(first distance (30) - second distance (28)).
