The invention provides a method for detecting a vehicle in a blind area. The method comprises the following steps: step1, collecting an image containing the blind area of a rearview mirror of the vehicle; step2, selecting a region of interest of the image, in which the vehicle possibly exists, in the image by a vehicle recognition method based on characteristics; and step3, performing scanning and matching in the region of interest of the image to detect the vehicle by an Adaboost algorithm. According to the method for detecting the vehicle in the blind area disclosed by the invention, after the image containing the blind area of the rearview mirror of the vehicle is collected, firstly the region of interest of the image, in which the vehicle possibly exists, is selected in the image by the vehicle recognition method based on the characteristics and then the vehicle is detected by scanning and matching the region of interest of the image by the Adaboost algorithm. In such a way, regions except the region of interest of the image on the image of the blind area are not required to scan, match and detect so that the number of matching is greatly decreased; the calculated amount and the calculated time of a system are reduced; the real-time property of the system is improved; and finally the safety of the vehicle is improved.
