The invention relates to a method for controlling a closure element arrangement (1) of a motor vehicle. The closure element arrangement (1) has a closure element (2), for example a tailgate (6), a drive arrangement (3) which is associated with the closure element (2), a control arrangement (4), and a sensor arrangement (5) with at least one sensor element (6, 7) which is designed in particular as a proximity sensor. The measured values (8, 9) of the sensor arrangement (5) are monitored as part of an operating event monitoring process by means of the control arrangement (4) in order to check for the presence of a specified operating event, such as a foot movement for example, and the drive arrangement (3) is controlled dependent on the result of the operating event monitoring process. The mechanical configuration of the motor vehicle during normal operation can be changed by an adjusting process and/or by an assembly process, of a trailer coupling for example. The mechanical configuration of the motor vehicle is detected by means of the control arrangement (4), and the operating event monitoring process is modified dependent on the mechanical configuration of the motor vehicle.
