The invention relates to a ship prewarning method. The method comprises a ship peripheral target detection warning system which comprises a camera shooting component, a sensor component, image preprocessing equipment, target recognition equipment, target characteristic extracting equipment, target template storage equipment and processing equipment, wherein the camera shooting component, the image preprocessing equipment, the target recognition equipment and the target characteristic extracting equipment are sequentially connected so as to acquire characteristics of a ship peripheral target; the processing equipment is respectively connected with the target characteristic extracting equipment and the target template storage equipment so as to recognize target types; the processing equipment is also capable of realizing target detection warning based on the target distances respectively detected by the target characteristic extracting equipment and the sensor component. By virtue of the ship prewarning method, a ship can conveniently detect the existence of targets around a ship body in time, further the target type is recognized, and corresponding warning information is supplied according to the relative position condition of the targets and the ship body.
