The invention discloses a container ship based on novel ballast tanks. Side ballast tanks are symmetrically arranged at two shipboards; and the side ballast tank at every shipboard is divided into an upper-layer ballast tank 1 and a lower-layer ballast tank 2, wherein the tank height of the upper-layer ballast tank is 20-80% of the whole tank height of the upper-layer ballast tank and the lower-layer ballast tank 2. All the side ballast tanks of the ultra-large container ship are designed to have upper and lower layers. In the navigation and the use of the ship, under the precondition of satisfying usage specifications, the height of the gravity center of side ballast water is raised, the upper-layer side ballast tanks are used for loading to the greatest extent, and the difference between the height of the gravity center and the height of the stability can be effectively reduced, so that the height of the initial stability of the ship is reduced, the roll period and the roll initial velocity of the ship are improved, and the crew safety and living comfort and the container loading safety and sealing safety are improved.
