Produced is a modified conjugated diene polymer, namely a modified form of a conjugated diene polymer, which is obtained by polymerizing a conjugated diene compound or polymerizing a conjugated diene compound and an aromatic vinyl compound in the presence of an alkali metal compound or an alkaline earth metal compound. Specifically, a modified conjugated diene polymer is produced by a production method which comprises a main chain modification step wherein a specific compound having a functional group that interacts with silica is reacted with an unsaturated bond moiety other than an end and/or a functional group moiety of a terminally modified polymer that has a functional group, which interacts with silica, at at least one end of a conjugated diene polymer.
