An apparatus for three-dimensional attitude control and stabilization of spacecraft is disclosed. The novel geometry of the present invention allows for active control and passive stabilization about all axes through one single unit, referred to herein as the Hydrodynamic-Reaction Actuator (HyDRA). The proposed control mechanism is equipped with two orthogonally positioned micro-pumps controlling two of the three axes, with the third axis controlled through coupling effects. The actuator consists of a spherical shell with an internal sphere to direct the flow. By regulating the velocity of the flow inside the shell the required torque about a spacecraft axis is developed to achieve a desired attitude maneuver. Due to its innovative design, manufacturing approach, and light weight, the present invention has vast applications, not limited to, future space missions.
