Varistors are disclosed which have desirable characteristics for providing voltage reversal tolerance in fuel cell stacks. Such a varistor is characterized by a high resistance at an applied voltage below about 0.95 V and a low resistance at an applied voltage above about 2 V, in which the high resistance is more than two orders of magnitude greater than the low resistance. The varistors can be electrically connected in parallel across the electrodes in one or more fuel cells in the stack. During normal operation, fuel cell voltage and current output are essentially unaffected. However, during a voltage reversal event, most of the damaging current is essentially shunted through the varistor.
