There is described a motor vehicle safety device that prevents accidents caused by persons texting while driving. An application on the handset device is integrated into hardware within the vehicle connected to the vehicle's ignition system. When the keys are put into the ignition system of the vehicle, the ignition is not 'live' or responsive until the application is set to 'lockout' the screen of the phone. Once the screen is locked out, the ignition system becomes live as usual, and the keys can then be used to start the vehicle. Should the application not be in handset screen lockout mode, the vehicle will not start. This vehicle ignition lockout is driven electronically, whereby the removal of power/trigger and/or ground wire disables the ignition system.
