A lifting system (L) includes a vertically extending parallel pair of fixedly spaced apart guide surfaces (52, 53), a linear actuator (49) suspended vertically between said pair of guide surfaces (52, 53), a vertically elongate runner member (50) having a pivotal connection (51) to a lower end of said linear actuator (49) to be vertically reciprocated by said actuator (49), a load bearing member (75) at a lower end of said runner member (50) at a location spaced downwardly from said pivotal connection (51) and a vertically spaced apart pair of sliding contact members (59, 60) on said runner member (50) for relatively slidable contact with said pair of guide surfaces (52, 53) during vertical reciprocation of said runner member (50) by said actuator (49). Each of said contact members (59, 60) comprises a projecting contact pad (64C) having a concave surface (64S) for slidable contact with one of said guide surfaces (52, 53).
