Abstract A heave compensation system is disclosed. In one aspect, there is provided a heave compensation system configured operable in providing a primary compensatory response to a load applied thereto during operations. In one embodiment, the compensation system comprises a compensated elevator link or workstring compensator comprising a cylinder housing, a rod having an end comprising a piston head adapted to be slideably received within the cylinder housing for defining a hydraulic cylinder having an annulus for receiving a non-compressible fluid, and the rod comprising a passage for receiving a compressible fluid. The compensated elevator link or workstring compensator further comprises the piston head comprising at least one passage to allow selective movement of the non-compressible fluid between the annulus of the cylinder housing and the passage within the rod during selective operation of the hydraulic cylinder by way of the compressible and non-compressible fluids cooperable with each other so as to allow the compensated elevator link or workstring compensator to be operable toward and/or from one of a contracted condition and an extended condition in response to the load.
