The invention relates to a speed monitoring device (41) for measuring an rpm or rotational speed of a main drive shaft (27) of a passenger transportation system (1) For this purpose, said speed monitoring device (41) has at least one rpm sensor (43) with an input shaft (45), a pinion (47) and a tap device (49) which is configured in such a way that it can be arranged on a shaft lateral face (39) of the main drive shaft (27) of a passenger transportation system (1) whose rpm is to be measured. Furthermore, a mount (60) for attaching the rpm sensor (40) and the pinion (47) in a positionally fixed position relative to a rotational axis of the tap device (49) is present, wherein the tap device (49) has a toothing arrangement (53) which can be coupled to the pinion (47) in a rotation-transmitting fashion, and the pinion (47) is rotatably mounted in the mount (60) at two bearing points (55, 57).
