The invention relates to a switching unit, in particular for a voltage-limiting device, which switching unit has a first stationary switching contact (14) which is electrically connected to a first unit connection (8), a second stationary switching contact (15) which is electrically connected to a second unit connection (9), and a moving switching contact (16). Furthermore, the invention relates to a voltage-limiting device which has a switching unit (5) of this kind. The first and the second stationary switching contact (14, 15) of the switching unit are arranged next to one another in such a way that the contact areas (14A, 15A) of said switching contacts point in the same direction. The moving switching contact (16) can be moved between a closed position, in which the first and the second stationary switching contact (14, 15) are electrically connected to one another, and an open position, in which the first and the second stationary switching contact (14, 15) are separated from one another. The first and the second stationary switching contact (14, 15) and the moving switching contact (16) form an arrangement of electrical conductors which are arranged substantially parallel to one another. At least one of the stationary switching contacts (14, 15) has an elongate contact area which extends in current flow direction A. Electrodynamic forces act on the stationary conductors (14, 15) and the moving conductor (16), said electromagnetic forces being directed in such a way that the conductors attract each other, i.e. the switching contacts tend to close.
