Abstract A rail network management system is described that comprises a rail monitoring system arranged to determine 5 the current number of trains on at least one track section of the rail network. The system is arranged to determine a required number of trains on the at least one track section in order for the rail network to operate according to a defined production schedule. The system is also 10 arranged to facilitate communication to an operator of the current number of trains on the at least one track section and the required number of trains on at the least one track section.
