A telepresence system comprising an electronic visual display, at least one sensor configured to track movements of the electronic visual display and a receiver configured to receive video information in real-time or near real-time from a monitoring apparatus that is remote from the electronic visual display. The telepresence system also comprises a processor in communication with the electronic visual display, the sensor and the receiver. The processor is configured to cause a three-dimensional virtual world to be displayed on the electronic visual display, wherein the three-dimensional virtual world is rendered from a point of view of a virtual camera positioned in the three-dimensional virtual world and comprises a geometric primitive surrounding, at least in part, the virtual camera. The processor is also configured to cause the video information to be texture mapped and displayed onto a surface of the geometric primitive and to cause the virtual camera and geometric primitive to move relative to one another in response to movements of the electronic visual display tracked by the sensor.
