Apparatus (100) for gripping and applying a lengthwise force to a shoring bar (102), comprising an elongate member (108) and first and second jaws (104, 106). In an initial position of the apparatus a shoring bar is receivable between the jaws with clearance and with a handle portion (110) of the elongate member extending to one side of the shoring bar. The apparatus is movable from the initial position to a working position in which the jaws contact opposite sides of the shoring bar and a force exerted on the handle in a direction lengthwise of the shoring bar is transferred to the shoring bar. At least the first jaw comprises a jaw component (114) that is pivotable relative to the elongate member when the apparatus is moved between the initial and working positions. When the apparatus is returned from the working position to the initial position, the jaw component is returned by resilient means such as a spring (128) to the orientation it has in the initial position. A first part (120) of the jaw component may be shaped to conform to the cross-sectional shape of the shoring bar. (0(00 (36
