Abstract A particular embodiment of the invention relates to a barrier 10 adapted to impede or at least reduce the impact of bodies of water impacting onto the stern of a vessel 46; in particular, the barrier 10 is adapted to reduce the kinetic energy of waves that break onto the stern of the vessel 46. The barrier 10 is particularly useful to impede waves from impacting with relative large force against, for example, containers located behind the barrier 10 due to the fact that the screen 12 is adapted to absorb most of the kinetic energy of the waves by breaking up the wave and only permitting water with relative low kinetic energy levels to enter the main deck 50; thus the barrier 10 is suitable to be installed at the sterns of, for example, offshore supply vessels to protect cargo located on the main deck 50 of the vessel 46.
