A user can input commands into a lock (100, 210, 300) by gesturing on a surface (312) of the lock (100, 210, 300). The gesture is made by sliding a finger (360) over multiple buttons (150, 340, 342, 344) on the lock surface (312). The lock (100, 210, 300) recognizes the gesture based on the buttons (150, 340, 342, 344) touched by the sliding finger (360) and the order in which they were touched. The lock (100, 210, 300) associates a particular command with the recognized gesture.
