Provided is a heavy load pneumatic radial tire with which it is possible to effectively suppress progress of destruction within a low-heat-generating base rubber, which contributes to an improvement in high-speed durability, to achieve high durability. In the heavy load pneumatic radial tire according to the present invention, a tread rubber (6) is formed by laminating a cap rubber (5) and a base rubber (4), and at least four belt layers (3a through 3e) are arranged at a radial direction inner side of the tread rubber (6). A radial direction outer side of a width directional edge of at least one of the radial direction outermost belt layer (3e) and the widest belt layer (3c) is covered by a reinforcing rubber layer (7), stopping without reaching a tire equatorial plane (E), at a radial direction inner side of the tread rubber (6). A correlation in terms of modulus of repulsion elasticity between a reinforcing rubber which forms the reinforcing rubber layer (7) and the base rubber (4) satisfies the condition of reinforcing rubber < base rubber (4).
