An undercarriage system (14) for a track-type machine (10) includes a ground engaging track (16), and an idler (30) for the ground engaging track (16) having a hub (32) formed of a relatively lower hardness metallic material, and a compound annular rim (50) capping the hub (32) and being formed of a relatively higher hardness metallic material. The hub (32) includes a radially projecting outer spine (48), which is annular and concentric with an idler mounting bore (33) defined by an inner peripheral surface (44) of the hub (32). First and second rim components (56a, 56b) of the compound annular rim (50) abut one another and sandwich the radially projecting outer spine (48). Each of the first and second abutting rim components (56a, 56b) includes a stepped profile. The idler (30) may include a remanufactured idler having a reusable hub (32) and replacement compound annular rim (50).
