A desired search range is efficiently monitored.  Provided is a monitoring device which is mounted in the body of an airplane flying in the sky and monitors the state of the sea from the sky, the monitoring device being provided with a light-transmitting unit (11) that is provided with a light source and applies a plurality of slit-shaped light beams toward a search region on the sea from the sky, a light receiving unit (12) that receives a plurality of reflected light beams reflected by an object on the sea, and a processing unit (27) that determines from information relating to the reflected light beams acquired from the light receiving unit (12) whether or not the object on the sea which has reflected the beams is an object to be searched for.
