THIRTY-ONE YEARS ago Britain had emerged from the most perilous phase of her history since the Norman invasion of 1066. She emerged with the knowledge that, to put it in Sir Winston Churchill's words, “the only real security on which sound military principles will rely is that you should be master of your own air”. At that time France lay prostrate after the blitzkrieg carried out under overwhelming German air superiority.
