When jet aircraft were first introduced to military and civil operations, the question of economic training arose almost immediately. It was thought initially that only pilots with many hours of flight experience could handle the high speeds of the jets. It wasn't long, however, until the experts determined that the jets weren't difficult to fly. They were just “different” to fly. To meet this new era, simple jets were developed for use as basic trainers. Despite their relative simplicity, these aircraft had operating costs between five and seven times the costs of previous piston-engined trainers. The costs soon imposed limits on this type of training.
