THE effect of axial constraint on box beams of approximately rectangular section, subject to torsion, is of interest to the aircraft designer in connexion with the stressing of two-spar skin-covered wings. The stresses due to torsion in a uniform box with one end built-in have been investigated by D. Williams, both by rigid methods and using the ordinary “engineer's” theory of bending. Three simple types of loading are considered:—
