AEROPLANE designers in the past four years have been striving for greater speed, with the result that the average speed of models receiving approved type certificates from the Aeronautics Branch of the Department of Commerce has been gradually increasing. Along with this increase in speed, however, there has been a decrease in the average of pay load carried in comparison with horse-power, and also in comparison with gross weight. Moreover, there has been an increase in the average landing speed.
