With managers stifled of initiative and head office decisions based on wrong information, Central Wagon — the steel processing and engineering group — used to be a classic example of how not to run a company, says its present chairman, Geoffrey Rose. Now, having got the group out of debt and on to a profitable footing, Rose is looking for ways to accelerate Central Wagon's growth — including a joint venture in Spain to produce oil pipes for the North Sea and the Middle East. Ken Gooding reports.
