WE publish this month an article by Mr Haas, head of the Fatigue Laboratory at Bristol, on the incidence of fatigue tests in the evaluation of the service life of an aircraft. We believe that this paper marks an important step in the progress towards getting down to the problem of what must be done to prepare a properly planned programme of tests to put the subject on a sound basis and provide the engineer with adequate information to enable him to forecast the effects of fatigue and therefore provide against them at an early point in the design stage.
