Recently given before the Royal Aeronautical Society by A. L. Blackman of Smiths Industries, this paper began by looking at the overall picture of such systems which can possess a software package as large as anything flying today. The FMCS involves expertise in many fields including operational procedures and two-crew certification, design of computers, non-volatile memory and software and performance algorithms in both the horizontal and vertical planes. Input/output interfaces are also involved as well as flight simulator software, built-in test design, maintenance interfaces and many other features.
