ALIVE to the new problems resulting from the advent of higher power engines and the need for increased aeroplane speeds and greater operational heights, Rotol Airscrews Ltd., have evolved what is claimed to be the first feathering “constant speed” contra-rotating air-screw. It may be of interest therefore to indicate how the contra-rotating airscrew has overcome the difficulty of efficiently converting engine power into thrust, eliminating automatically the effect of torque reaction on the aircraft, neutralizing swing at take-off, or upon sudden opening and closing of the throttle in flight, and thus generally improving manoeuvrability.
