It is vital that the extremely high standards of engineering associated with aircraft engines are constantly and rigorously maintained if major breakdowns are to be avoided. Most types of engine are superficially inspected after every 50 hours of flying time. However, in the event of a breakdown, or after 4,000 to 8,000 hours in the air, or comprehensive engine overhaul is initiated in which every single component is put through the most stringent testing.
