Progress of the joint Anglo-American Harrier II programme will be marked in 1985 by the formation of the first US Marine Corps (USMC) operational squadron of AV-8Bs and the first flight of the Harrier GR Mk. 5 for the RAF. The latter aircraft will vary slightly from those for the USMC in that they will be equipped to meet the close support role in Central Europe which necessitates the inclusion of a moving map display and two additional underwing weapon stations, as well as other differences.
