Abstract In order to promote the use of satellite data for oceanographic applications, IFREMER, DMN and CNES developed the French Processing and Archiving Facility with the support of the European Space Agency which manages the overall ERS-1 ground segment activity. The French project aims at building a three component system: —an Operational Center for archiving and processing of data and diffusion of products to the users; —an Experimental Center for the development and improvement of algorithms and products, and geophysical validation activities; —a Meterological Data Production System. The paper describes: F-PAF design requirements, F-PAF organization, systems broad outline, products presentation, processing software design concepts, data quality assessment and validation activity.
