AbstractThis study analyzes a new class of force sensors (accelerometers and pressure sensors), based on miniature surface acoustic wave (SAW) resonators. The expected performance of SAW accelerometers and pressure transducers is estimated and compared with published data. It is shown that an ideal SAW accelerometer has a performance comparable with high-quality force-balanced servo accelerometers. However, the attainment of the required dynamic range and resolution may hinder the design of a prototype. The performance of the best laboratory SAW pressure sensors is already comparable in precision with the digital-pressure transducers employing an intricately-shaped quartz resonator.
