Abstract To promote the design and optimization as well as a deeper understanding of pintle injectors further, the progress on atomization and mixing characteristics of pintle injectors were reviewed in this paper. Considering the dilemma of highly empirical dependence in industrial structure design, significant achievements in the structure design and optimization of pintle injectors were summarized first. Then, the atomization and mixing characteristics of the pintle injectors were discussed in detail, with emphasis on their measurement techniques and simulation approaches. Finally, the future challenges regarding the atomization and mixing of pintle injectors were summarized, and corresponding research suggestions were also provided. This review presented the recent achievements, future perspectives and challenges on atomization and mixing of the pintle injectors, which is expected to provide insight into further exploration in scientific research and industrial application.

    Highlights The design and optimization of pintle injector are reviewed. The atomization characteristics of pintle injector are summarized. The mixing characteristics of pintle injector are discussed. Some suggestions for further research are proposed.
