Abstract A linear mathematical model to describe the fuel consumption of cars traversing a stretch of road is given, and the parameters of this model are estimated using data from a designed experiment carried out in Sydney, Australia. It is shown how these parameter estimates can be used in planning future traffic experiments. Travel time is also considered, both as end in itself, and as a means of improving accuracy in a fuel consumption experiment.
