Abstract This paper provides a generalized systems approach for the design and development of a large scale carpooling system. In particular, a practical design philosophy is presented which encompasses the various technical components of this problem. Also, a cost functional is introduced which assigns a measure of match quality to the participants, and participant-domain expansion criteria are developed for use in conjunction with large scale geographic data bases such as those under development by the U.S. Bureau of the Census. Finally, some results are presented from a computerized version of such a program which has been developed and is running for students at the University of Minnesota.
