AbstractA series of experiments on thermal Marangoni flows has been performed with the aid of the computerized microgravity simulator of the Institute U. Nobile to study all the dependencies of the main governing quantities on different parameters, such as the geometry of the floating zone (aspect ratio and shape factor) and the liquid forming the bridge (silicon oil) characterized through its Prandtl number. The order of magnitude analysis, performed in previous works, establishes fundamental relationships among the governing experimental quantities. These relationships have been checked by experiments performed on a microscale floating zone.
