AbstractIn January 1986, Voyager 2 will pass within 110,000 kilometers of the planet Uranus, nearly three billion kilometers from Earth. This will be man's first exploration of the seventh planet, its dark rings, satellites, and possible magnetosphere. At Uranus, Voyager 2 will have been in space for over eight years—well beyond its design goal to survive through Saturn. These considerations, plus the fact that the spacecraft has had several significant problems since launch, lead to unique mission design and mission operations problems and correspondingly unique solutions.
